This is a prime example of a soundtrack that perfectly complements and (one could argue) enhances the film it accompanies.

Stand-Out Track: My Heart Asks Pleasure First / The Promise
A real mix (almost hotch-potch) of cover versions, guest artist appearances, live tracks, interview excerpts and new material, which almost works. It provided the soundtrack to the ‘rockumentary’ of the same title, which itself was a little self-indulgent in places. The gospel version of ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ takes this particular song to new heights, ‘Heartland’ is brooding and moody, but I have a real soft spot for …
Stand-Out Track: Angel Of Harlem
Prince, the King of all Purpleness and Master of the Extremely Unconventional broke into the world of cinema (to a rather mixed critical reception) with ‘Purple Rain’. Which came first then: the film or its soundtrack? If you ask me, it had to be the music. By comparison, the film is an afterthought, a mere vehicle to promote the music. The music can more than stand on its own two feet though. ‘When Doves Cry’ is sublime, ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ is as OTT an album-opener as I think you will find in modern music and the lighter-waving Purple Rain is simply THE slow-rock/pop anthem of the 80’s.
Stand-Out Track: Purple Rain
Richard Melville Hall – related to Herman Melville, author of ‘Moby Dick’ – hence ‘Moby’ – I see. ‘Play’ was his fifth studio album, but was the one that brought him to the attention of the music-buying public in 1999, thanks to ‘Natural Blues’ and ‘Porcelain’ to name but two. Many of the tracks contained samples, but my impression was that they were blended well with the original music, with the one complementing the other. Many of the tracks were used in TV adverts or shows. One I remember is an episode of the X Files (haven’t watched that in ages) called ‘All Things’ which used this track particularly effectively …
Stand-Out Track: The Sky Is Broken
The soundtrack to the Millennium Dome Show, but don’t let that put you off. Head for ‘Father Son’ for a powerful, heartfelt song. If it doesn’t move you, then you have a heart of stone.
Stand-Out Track: Father Son
2003 soundtrack to the 1929 silent documentary by Russian director Dziga Vertov.
Stand-out Track: All Things
Easily the best French thing to appear on the TV since Sacha Distel, ‘Les Revenants’ was the surprise (if somewhat chilling and occasionally gory) cult hit of summer 2013 and this tingly soundtrack did everything to enhance the on-screen tension.
Stand-Out Track: The Huts
Used as the soundtrack to the famous TV series ‘Cosmos’ with Karl Sagan, this really is an interstellar journey with a stop-over halfway for (IMO) the best Jon (Anderson) and Vangelis collaboration ever ….
Stand-Out Track: So Long Ago, So Clear
A real mixture of musical styles, but one that perfectly complements Maximus and his quest for justice. The vocals and song-writing of Lisa Gerrard add a haunting yet sharp edge.
Stand-Out Track: Now We Are Free
A veritable symphony of sound. Possibly the great Greek’s grandest. It is rounded off by one of his best. Take a listen. It is 7 minutes well spent.
